I imagine others must have found it similarly difficult to read tone over a medium like this, just like you can with letters sometimes. So they must have made these little faces so people can show what they're feeling a little better. There's a fair few of them so you can display all sorts of feelings. Like these:

See? I don't quite understand them all but they definitely convey some sort of emotion.
