Character: Horatio Hornblower
Variation: Hunger Games AU PSL
About: Horatio was raised in District 11 by a loving and mostly stable nuclear family. Most of his childhood was spent in the orchards and then the fields with his fathers, while nights were spent baking with his mother in an attempt to eke out extra income. For the most part, Horatio had always been good at keeping his head down, which meant his only real torment was from Jack Simpson, another boy in his community. Happily, much of the older boy's torment was kept at bay by the protection of his closest friend, Archie Kennedy.
The Games were always a lurking reality, but something mostly kept in the back of his mind--until Archie was reaped. Watching took on a new horror, and then a new pain as the numbers dwindled and Archie kept surviving. What truly broke Horatio's heart was watching Archie, second to last man standing, ultimately killed viciously by a Career. It was staggeringly difficult to recover from, and Horatio was still off-kilter from the loss when he found himself reaped for the next year's Games, alongside his tormentor Simpson. Thankfully, through the machinations of his mentor Pellew, his week of training was spent with James Norrington(you know, the guy from PotC), a slightly older tribute and Career from District 1 who has promised to keep him safe as long as he can in the Arena.
Horatio is being pulled from the first night in the Arena, having just killed Jack Simpson. The most meaningful relationship he has right now is with James, without whom he's feeling more than a little lost, but that won't stop him from wanting to cling to Starhue with everything he's got. His farm reminds him of home, but a much better one--one where he's farming for himself and one where no one is going to abruptly pull him or anyone else he meets away into something as horrible as he personally understands the Games to be. He'll be skittish for a while, but nothing is going to knock him away from clinging to this bid at a heightened opportunity for something much better than normalcy.

Archie Kennedy
[Home CR] Archie was Horatio's dearest friend and strongest protector through most of his childhood. Unfortunately, Archie was reaped in last year's Games, making it down to the final two before being brutally murdered by the last Career standing. The hole left in Horatio's heart by this loss continues to gape wide, a constant digging reminder of how quickly everything can be lost.

Edward Pellew
[Home CR] Pellew was Horatio's mentor for the week he stayed in the Capitol, and had been Archie's mentor previously. They had been faintly aware of one another after Archie's death, but the real closeness between them began on the long, horrible ride to the Capitol. Pellew is currently working on a plan to get both Horatio and James out alive--although his priority is absolutely Horatio.

[Home CR] James took Horatio under his wing nearly the moment he arrived at the Capitol. The two met in the training center, and through a series of machinations have wound up as de facto teammates in the Arena. Neither of them have truly contemplated the reality that, in the end, one will likely have to kill the other.

Soon after arrival, Horatio climbed out of a tree to find he had somehow lost track of himself and wound up on Lilith's land. Amazingly, she was both kind enough not to mind and patient enough to let him offer to assist her with apple tree cuttings. They've shared an orange. Lilith also came to check on him during the hornet scare and has been incredibly kind about his panic.

Soon after arrival, Horatio answered Sebastian's ad to help out as a farmhand on Sebastian's farm. A week or so later, Sebastian offered Horatio use of his basic maths textbooks. That part's been much more endearing.

Horatio met Yukizome at the festival. She offered him dango, and when she was incredibly gentle with his obvious startlement, he offered her bread in return. She's also checked in on him during his hornet scare.

Alec "Alice" Liddell
Soon after arrival, Horatio met Alec coming along the path. After some initial ruffled feathers, they've fallen into a comfortable enough sort of knowing. Mostly Horatio appreciates that Alec can carry a conversation forever on his own.
